“Seamless and Sophisticated”
Bellingham Wines showcases its dedication to quality with top ratings in annual Platter’s Wine Guide.
Cape Town – The annual wait is over. The much-anticipated results in the 38th installment of the Platter’s Wine Guide have been announced, and Bellingham Wines is honoured to be included as one of the Wines of the Year for its 5 Star rated Bellingham The Bernard Series Small Barrel SMV 2014.
The annual Platter’s Wine Guide is one of the few wine guides in the world with the expressed aim of tasting and rating every wine from every vintage South Africa offers – and has been a trusted consumer wine guide since 1980.
Over 8000 local wines are reviewed by respective Platter’s Wine Guide tasters, who asses’ wines sighted, and then submit wines scored 4,5 Stars for a blind tasting by the larger Platter’s Wine Guide panel. The wines that the panel regards as “superlative” are awarded the guide’s highest rating, namely 5 Stars – or an overall score of 95/100 or more. This year only 111 wines were deemed worthy of the coveted 5 Star rating.
The Bellingham Bernard Series Small Barrel SMV 2014 is a blend of 85% Shiraz with the difference made up of Mourvédre and Viognier, and was matured in small French oak casks, for 14 months.
This succulent red blend is described in the Platter’s 2018 guide as “thought provoking” and complimented for its “bold fruit core, (that is) well harmonized with oak, opulently enveloped by spice, prune and rosepetal. Natural winemaking that gives a seamless and sophisticated wine.”
This Shiraz-based blend claimed the highest Platter’s score in Bellingham’s portfolio, and is supported by a solid base of 4, 5 Stars from its sister wines in the cellar’s flagship range, The Bernard Series: all wines in this portfolio received a rating of 94/100. Adding to the cellar’s reputation for producing top quality wines across all its labels, Bellingham’s terroir-focused series, The Homestead Range delivered several 4 Star ratings. A new edition to the range, The Bellingham Homestead Series Chenin Blanc 2016, made from 35-year-old Paarl vines, was awarded 4,5 Stars – positioning this fresh and classic food wine as the perfect quality-versus-value option this festive season.
Winemaker at Bellingham, Niël Groenewald, said: “For Bellingham the 5 Star Platter’s rating underscores its reputation as a wine brand recognised for its pioneering work in Shiraz, and highlights its dedication to continue outstanding work to honour this legacy. Bellingham was the first South African winery to bottle a local single varietal Shiraz in 1951, and since then Shiraz has remained a focus variety of the estate. The supporting performance of Bellingham’s The Bernard Series and Homestead Range is an apt reflection of the quality-driven mandate we uphold in the cellar.”
These top-rated wines are available at select liquor outlets nationwide.
