Bellingham Vertical Vintage Case | A Historic Way To Celebrate A Historic Day

Have you ever heard of Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk?

Perhaps not, but if you dig into the rich terroir of Bellingham’s history, you’ll soon learn about this delightful duo. While Bellingham traces its roots back to 1693, it was not until a Polish Jew, and his Hungarian partner purchased the somewhat dilapidated farm in 1943 that the story began to thrive.

But of course, while Bernard Podlashuk was our visionary founder, the saying goes “behind every great man is an even greater woman”. Where Bernard placed his energy into winemaking and restoring the farm, Fredagh set about rehabilitating the untended grounds with her team of helpers. Her love for roses meant a generous introduction of them to the gardens. And as Fredagh did not do anything by half measure, she planted 860 rose plants, completely transforming the 4 ½ acres of historic land – a legacy which lives on to this day.

In tribute to powerhouse Fredagh and inspiring women everywhere, this Women’s Month we are celebrating with our own historic, fine wines. Our winemaker Richard Duckitt has curated 2 vintage cases – one featuring our Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc and one featuring our Bernard Series Basket Press Syrah.

After all, the accolade-winning, boutique Bernard Series offers hand-crafted wines produced with the goal of ageability front of mind. While these wines are already drinking beautifully, they will continue to cellar well for a further 5 – 10 years, making them an ideal collectable wine for cellaring or gifting. Because these wines are not available for sale anywhere else, stock is limited as we are accessing them from our vintage vinothèque. It is something extraordinary and once-in-a-lifetime.

Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc Vintage Case
Includes the 2015, 2016 and 2017 vintages

The grapes for this distinctive Chenin Blanc are hand-picked from characterful and genuinely unique old bush vines specially blended from Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Darling. It features vibrant tropical fruit flavours with hints of honey and oak spice on the finish.

Bernard Series Basket Press Syrah Vintage Case
Includes the 2015, 2016 and 2017 vintages

Made from fruit grown in low-yielding Stellenbosch and Paarl vineyards, the Syrah grapes are specially crushed in a small-batch basket press to preserve the natural dark berry fruit tinged with subtle fynbos and black and white pepper spice.

Here’s to women everywhere – but in particular, to our very own Fredagh Podlashuk, who’s bloom-filled paradise continues to blossom to this day as Bellingham Wine Estate!
